garden tips by region - water veggies

The heat is on and your vegetable garden may start to suffer. Veggies need at least an inch of water every week to thrive. When nature isn’t playing nice, you need to take matters into your own hands.

How to Help Veggies Thrive in a Dry Spell:

  1. Early morning is the best time to water. If you must water during the heat of the day, water only the base of the plant.
  2. Water once a week consistently to keep produce flowering, tomatoes from cracking, and leafy plants from bolting.
  3. Check how much water your garden is getting by using a rain gauge. Or, stick your finger an inch into the soil. Water if dry.
  4. Soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems are efficient for vegetable gardens. Talk to a Garden Center associate to find the best solution for your garden.
  5. Don’t use sprinklers during the hottest part of the day because most of the water will evaporate before it reaches the ground.
  6. Weeds compete for water, so keep them out.
  7. Don’t fertilize during a heat wave. Thirsty plants soak up fertilizer faster, which could burn them.
  8. Spread a thick blanket of mulch so you don’t have to water as much.
