gardening tips by region - tropical bulbs

Late summer is a great time to plant tropical bulbs, one of the easiest plants to grow. These tropical bulbs look great in containers, too.

Some, such as callas and lilies, burst with beautiful blooms perfect for bouquets. Others, such as elephant’s ear and canna, offer huge, dramatic foliage that create an exotic flair. For the best show, plant a lot of bulbs.

Plant Tropical Bulbs in 5 Simple Steps:

  1. Follow spacing instructions on package to dig holes for your bulbs. Elephant’s ear in particular can grow to be 6’ tall and 3’ wide and needs a lot of space in the garden.
  2. Set bulbs firmly in place, pointed side up. But don’t worry too much; the bulb will find its way to the sun.
  3. Mix bulb food in soil, cover and water thoroughly.
  4. Cover with 2-3” of mulch.
  5. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer when bulbs start growing and feed every 2-3 weeks.
