Fresh herbs are the perfect complement to the garden and the kitchen, bringing zest to any dish. Now is the time to plant herbs like basil, ginger and rosemary that love the summer heat.
PLANT HERBS IN CONTAINERS:
- Fill a container halfway with potting soil for vegetables. Add 2” of compost, then fill the container the rest of the way, leaving a hole in the center large enough for your herb.
- Remove herb seedling from container and loosen roots around the bottom.
- Place the herb into the hole and cover the roots with soil.
- Place in a sunny spot in your garden, on your deck or patio.
- Water thoroughly. Containers lose moisture quickly in the heat, so check daily and water as needed.
Short on space? Plant several herbs in one container.
PLANT HERBS IN THE GARDEN:
- If you haven’t done so, perform a soil test to ensure your plants get the nutrients they need.
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden.
- Work the soil and dig a hole slightly larger and wider than your herb seedling.
- Add 2” of compost to the bottom of the hole.
- Place the plant into the hole and press the soil around it to cover the roots and remove air pockets.
- Water thoroughly and check regularly to ensure adequate moisture during hot weather.
