Plan ahead and decide whether you want a garden bed or if you’d like to create a container garden filled with luscious tomatoes, salad greens and herbs near your kitchen door or on the patio. Plant only what you like to eat or new veggies you’d like to try.
Find a warm, sunny indoor spot with room for seed trays, then purchase seeds and seed-starting supplies.
WHEN TO TAKE ACTION:
- Read seed packets to find out how many weeks each variety takes to grow indoors before the last frost date in your area.
- Many vegetable seed packets state a number of days to maturity, such as “65 days” or “80 days.” Make sure you know whether that means days from sowing the seed or days from transplanting outdoors; it can vary from vegetable to vegetable.
HOW TO GROW INDOORS:
Seed-starting happens in two stages, germination and growth, so you will need to plan ahead. Light isn’t needed for germination, but warmth is.
- Be sure you will be able to provide heat in a warm area. Tops of refrigerators are great, or heat mats are sold for this purpose.
- Once the growth stage begins and green sprouts are about a ½” tall, move the plants to a south-facing window or under grow lights or fluorescent lights, at a room temperature from 60-72 degrees.
