It’s amazing how many vegetables will thrive in the garden for weeks after the first hard frost — you just have to know which to plant. Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and kale taste best when matured in cool weather.

By planting seedlings now, in warm soil, these veggies will grow faster and become sweet and tender as the weather cools. The formula for success includes fertilizing the bed, mulching to maintain moisture, and protecting plants from pests.

Plant Broccoli, Cabbage or Kale:  

  1. Prepare the bed by removing old plants and weeds.
  2. Loosen the soil with a spading fork.
  3. Mix in a balanced garden fertilizer. Follow directions for how much to apply.
  4. Dig holes 6” deep, 6” wide and 18” apart.
  5. Sprinkle 3” of compost in the bottom of each hole.
  6. Water seedlings before removing from containers.
  7. Plant seedlings, setting them slightly deeper than they grew in the container. Firmly press the plants into place.
  8. Water thoroughly.
  9. Mulch with organic material.

Tip:

Caterpillars love cabbage. Treat plants every 10 days with an organic pesticide to prevent damage.
