Pick the Right Patio for You

When it’s too cold to spend much time in the garden, speed up your wait for warmer weather by picking a patio set suited to fit your needs.

The first step is to plan your furniture around the amount of traffic your porch or patio gets.

For those who love to spend the warmer months entertaining outdoors, it’s best to start by asking yourself what you spend the majority of your time doing on your patio. Are you usually lounging and socializing, or are you dining?

Making this distinction up front helps steer you toward either a seating set that features comfortable sofas, or a dining set with a table.

If you only use your patio sparingly or rarely entertain outdoors, you can stick to just a few chairs and focus instead on updating your grill.

Remember that if you live in a region with extreme weather, you need to purchase pieces durable enough to withstand the elements. Consider investing in patio furniture covers, or plan to make plenty of indoor storage space available to house your furniture through the rough seasons.

Once you know what type of patio set you’re shopping for, measure your outdoor space for an estimate of the size of furniture you need.

If necessary, measure the height of any railings or walls that surround your patio to ensure that your chairs will seat you high enough to enjoy the view.

Most apartment dwellers will do best with a high top bistro set.

Don’t forget about the amount of sun you’ll be exposed to during the hottest summer months. If your patio is already under an awning or a roof, then you’re covered – literally! If not, consider an umbrella to keep you cool.

If you choose to keep your patio uncovered, select furniture and accessories that will be easy to clean and won’t bleach from the sun and rain. Glass or metal tabletops are usually the easiest to maintain, and cushions made of polyester won’t mildew easily.
