All lawn care professionals know fall is the best time to repair lawn problems. Drought, foot-traffic or flooding wear down your lawn over time and leave unsightly bare spots. These few easy steps ensure the entire lawn is in tip-top shape next spring.

Fix a Problem Lawn:

  1. Address problems that killed grass in the first place. It may be time for a path or re-grading, for example.
  2. Eliminate weeds by hand pulling or spraying a broad-spectrum herbicide.
  3. Apply fall fertilizer with a broadcast spreader to the entire lawn.
  4. Turn the soil in the problem areas. Remove roots and stones as you go.
  5. Mix in fertilizer and compost with a shovel or roto-tiller.
  6. Rake smooth and level the soil.
  7. Spread grass seed blended for your area over problem spots by hand or with a broadcast spreader.
  8. Step on the newly seeded area, pressing seeds into soil.
  9. Apply a thin layer of straw, not hay, in areas that slope to retain moisture and keep seeds from washing away.
  10. Water for 15 minutes, once a day for up to two weeks. Keep the soil surface moist but not soggy.
  11. After two weeks or when seeds sprout, water for 30 minutes twice a week to promote deeper root growth.
  12. Do not mow newly seeded areas until the grass is 3” high and then only mow top 1/3 to promote strong root growth.

Tip:

Now is a great time to overseed the entire lawn to prevent future problems.
