The windy, colder days of winter have probably left leaves, limbs and bare spots on your lawn. Now is the time to prepare for the growing season. A healthy lawn starts with a good spring cleanup.

Start by evaluating your lawn. If it’s been well-maintained, a light raking will be enough for now. If you see trouble areas such as brown or bare spots, your lawn needs more attention.

Follow These Steps for a Lush, Green Lawn by Spring:

  1. Lightly rake leaves and dead grass and place in compost or lawn bags.
  2. Pick up broken limbs, trash and anything that may have accumulated over winter.
  3. Roughen up the soil surface with a rake and reseed brown or bare spots that winter may have killed.
  4. Water your lawn if it looks dry.
  5. If you have had a lot of water and warm temperatures, cut your grass now.
  6. Cut back ornamental grasses that didn’t get trimmed in the fall.
