Have family and friends leave messages for you using this pairing of a mailbox and a chalkboard. This handy message system uses a humble frame, painted the same color as the mailbox, to set it off from the siding of your house.

Chalkboard with a blue mail box

  • Paint tray
  • 1-inch foam brushes
  • Drop cloth
  • Outdoor latex paint, preferably gloss finish, color of your choice
  • Chalkboard
  • Picture frame to fit the chalkboard, preferably wood
  • Picture hanger set with 30 pounds tolerance
  • Tape measure
  • Hammer
  • Drop cloth

1. To get started, lay out drop cloth on a flat, level work surface, out of direct sunlight

2. Set the frame on wood shims or a small brick to keep it off of the drop cloth surface

3. Make sure the paint is well mixed and begin to apply with a foam brush

4. Once the first coat of paint has completely dried, apply a second for complete coverage and allow to fully dry (note; you can paint your mailbox between coats on the frame)

5. Once dry, mount the chalkboard into the frame

6. Using a tape measure, find the spot where the framed board will hang, centered over and approximately 9 inches above the mailbox

7. Hammer in the picture hanger and hang the board
