Looking to save water, time and money? Water your lawn in the early morning.

If you’re watering in the heat of the day, 14 percent of the water you put on your grass evaporates before ever reaching the roots. Watering the lawn in the early morning saves the average homeowner about 87 gallons a week.

Watering in the morning can save on average 4,524 gallons of water a year — enough to fill about 2,100 football stadiums!

If you have an automatic sprinkler system, set it to begin watering at 4 a.m. If you water by hand, do it before the sun comes up or in the evening.

If your sprinklers are operating on an old dial timer, you might want to upgrade to a new one. Digital timers are much easier to program and come with options to water more than once a day, which is helpful for establishing a new seed or sod lawn, or when overseeding.

We’ve all seen sprinkler systems running while it is raining and wasting a lot of water. You can easily attach a rain shutoff device or soil moisture sensor to a sprinkler timer and program it to come on when the ground is dry and the grass needs to be watered.

With the right watering system at the right time, you can save lots of water and money – and have a healthy lawn.
