  • A succulent terrarium.Peruse seed and plant catalogs or browse online to start planning for spring. Make note of varieties that tend to sell out and order them early.
  • Draft a planting plan for a spring vegetable garden; order seeds accordingly.
  • Dismantle Christmas greenery and add to compost pile.
  • Check tropical and indoor plants for mealy bug and scale, and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap.
  • Move houseplants away from chilly windows; rotate pots so the plants grow evenly.
  • Force more paperwhite and hyacinth bulbs for fragrant winter displays.
  • Re-pot orchids with a coarse bark mixture.
  • Clear the property of any fallen branches and split for firewood.
  • Make a terrarium with my granddaughter using moss and other things foraged from the garden.
  • Check firewood supply and restock.
  • Refill bird feeders as needed. To help the birds find fresh water, buy an inexpensive birdbath heater to keep the water from freezing; you will increase the frequency of visits.
