1. Arrange paint sticks

Arrange 13 paint sticks horizontally with the ruler side up. This will be the back of your wreath. Alternate the direction of your paint sticks to try something different.

2. Glue

Take two additional paint sticks to use as back braces. Squeeze some glue on the unmarked sides. Using the 4-inch ruler marks on the horizontal paint sticks as your guide, place the first paint stick 4 inches vertically from the left. Repeat on the right side.

Make sure not to glue the top of the paint stick. The top is how you will hang the project in a later step.

3. Reinforce

To reinforce the paint sticks holding the flag together, hammer in small nails. Now flip over the wood flag and hammer in any nails that pushed through to the other side.

4. Stain

When the glue is dry enough in 20-30 minutes, flip over the wood flag design and begin staining your project. Wipe off any excess stain with a paper towel or rag.

5. Tape off a square block

Now you’ll tape off some surface area for the stars block. Start by taping vertically at 11 inches from the left top. You’ll stop horizontally at paint stick 7.

6. Paint stripes for your flag design

Start by painting blue the square box we created with tape in step five. Next, start painting red horizontal stripes. Paint the first, topmost stick, then paint every other one. Just tape off each as you go to stay in the lines. When you’re done painting red, you’ll paint white horizontal stripes, taping off each area as you go.

7. Create stars

Using a pencil, put dot marks where you will create the stars. We took a bit of creative license here because we could not fit in all the stars that a typical flag has. We rotated between rows of five stars vertically then four.

Now, using your paint marker, draw or stencil stars where your dots are marked. Don’t worry about perfection. We drew our own and colored them in afterward.

8. Drill holes and thread twine

Drill holes on the two paint sticks jutting out from the top of your wood flag wreath. Now thread through sisal twine and hang. Use a command hook or wreath hanger.

9. Hang your wreath and enjoy

Now all you need to do is hang your wreath and enjoy. Try hanging it by an entryway, such as your front or back door.

You could also try hanging it above a cart or console table (don’t forget the succulents) or just about anywhere you’ve got a place to show your patriotic spirit.
