Make a Poinsettia Centerpiece

Brilliantly colored poinsettias, available in bright red, pink, white, or marbled and speckled shades, are handsome enough to stand alone on a holiday table. But you can also make them into a Christmas centerpiece by adding small plants and fresh-cut greenery.

When warm weather returns, remove the poinsettias and tuck in flowering plants like African violets, sphathiphyllums or begonias to refresh the centerpiece for spring. Choose plants that have the same basic requirements for light, water and fertilizer.

  1. Decide how tall to make your centerpiece, so you won’t block the view across the table.
  2. Use a 10″ bulb pan or other planter that measures about 10″ in diameter and 5″ tall. Optional: Put the planter in a pretty basket and add a bow.
  3. If your planter has drainage holes, use a saucer or tray to protect your table.
  4. Fill the planter 2/3 full of potting soil with fertilizer.
  5. Slip the poinsettia out of its pot and gently loosen the roots. Do the same with the other potted plants.
  6. Arrange your plants as desired. Try the “thriller, spiller, filler” design. The poinsettia is the thriller, or focus, of the arrangement. Spillers are smaller plants that spill or trail over the edge of the planter. Fillers are mounded plants used to fill out your arrangement. For a seasonal look, use fresh evergreen cuttings, such as holly branches or slender pine boughs, as fillers.
  7. Add enough soil to cover the roots and firm gently.
  8. Water to settle the soil. Drain any excess.
  9. If desired, attach holiday ornaments to floral wire and insert into the arrangement.
