In lieu of a traditional wreath, fashion a simple autumn floral basket to hang on your front door this season. This project is courtesy of Between Naps on the Porch, one of our favorite blogs.
Skill Level: Beginner
- Silk flowers
1. Stuff a few sheets of newspaper in the bottom of the basket as filler. Here, our blogger Susan Herin chose a brown basket with a rustic feel that contrasts nicely with her bold red door. Make sure the basket also suits the size of your door. She found this cone-shaped basket while antiquing, but you can use almost any shape. (Your local craft store will have a nice selection of baskets and silk flowers in stock).
2. Tuck in the flowers, starting with the taller stems in the center. Herin chose bunches of rust, cream and purple zinnias for their rich, autumn color. “I prefer live plants over faux/silk anytime, but there’s no denying the easy maintenance of silk plants for a front-door basket,” she says.
3. Use two bunches of tall thistle in the back to create a backdrop for the rest of the arrangement.
4. Finish by adding a couple sprigs of cream wisteria to drape over the front of the basket. Hang and enjoy!
