Garden tips by region aerator

One very important lawn care task often overlooked is aeration. Over time, lawns can become so compacted that water and nutrients just run off and are not absorbed. This stresses the grass and makes it easier for weeds to invade and take over.

Aerating is the process of punching holes in your lawn, about the size of your thumb, to allow water and nutrients to reach the roots quickly and deeply. Rent an aerating machine and renovate your lawn today to help it grow lush and beautiful again.

How to Aerate Your Lawn:

  1. Rent an aeration machine from The Home Depot that punches the holes and extracts the plugs from your soil.
  2. Run it over the lawn in careful stripes, so the entire lawn is equally perforated.
  3. Rake up the plugs left behind and compost them or use to patch bare spots.
  4. Spread topdressing and rake into the open holes to prevent their collapse when it rains.
  5. Water deeply.

Tip #1:

Cool-season grass plugs are a good addition to your compost pile. Plugs from warm-season grasses, like Bermuda and other aggressive runner grass, should not go into your compost.

Tip #2:

Aeration is most effective when followed by topdressing because it moves nutrients into the holes to keep them open for water and fertilizer.

Product Checklist:

  • Optional: bagged compost
