Take back the lawn from pesky insects this summer. Luckily, there are a wide variety of remedies to battle the bugs. Control flies, ticks, fleas, ants, gnats, yellow jackets and many others before they ruin your lawn or picnic.
REMEDIES TO KILL SUMMER INSECTS:
With all products, first read the label and follow directions thoroughly.
- Calculate how much product you’ll need to treat your entire lawn based on width x length and delivery rate per square foot listed on the package. On a dry day, pour product into rotary spreader. Apply half, running the spreader in a north/south pattern and half in an east/west pattern to lawns and flowerbeds. Water thoroughly.
- Capture flying insects like Japanese beetles, yellow jackets and wasps with traps. Place traps 30’ from doors and places where people congregate.
- Control mosquitoes by tossing a product that kills mosquito larvae into standing water.
- Stop soft-bodied insects like aphids, earwigs, ants, crickets, snails, slugs, millipedes and centipedes by sprinkling diatomaceous earth. Reapply after a hard rain.
Warning: Exercise caution around bodies of water when using insecticides that may be toxic to fish. Avoid breathing the dust or getting the product in your eyes or on your hands.
