Tomatoes and peppers when properly fertilized provide heaps of the produce you love. Apply a quality fertilizer now to produce a bountiful harvest later.
Starting with rich soil at planting time is important, and so is the right fertilizer. Pay attention to the three numbers on the fertilizer bag. They represent the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), in that order. The right fertilizer is low in N and high in P and K. Nitrogen promotes leafy plant growth but does nothing to encourage fruit production like P and K do.
Organic fertilizers work, but don’t contain balanced amounts of N-P-K. For example, manure is low in phosphorus so adding bone meal at the same time would provide a more complete diet.
To Apply Fertilizer:
- Choose a granular or liquid fertilizer.
- Start fertilizing when the first fruit forms.
- Sprinkle or spray fertilizer around the side of each plant.
- Be careful not to get any granular fertilizer on leaves or stems because it might burn.
- Cover granular fertilizer with 1-2” of soil.
- Feed every three weeks for extra nourishment.
- Follow label instructions for proper application.
- Wear gloves.
