garden tips by region - fall produce

Now is the time to plant your favorite fall vegetables that thrive in cool temperatures. From broccoli and cabbage to herbs and greens, your fall garden can be ready to go in less than an hour, providing the freshest produce for your family all season long.

Plant Fall Herbs and Edibles:

  1. Choose vegetables that grow well in cooler temperatures such as salad greens, broccoli, carrots and herbs. Ask your Garden Center associate for recommendations.
  2. Remove any existing plant material and loosen the soil with a spading fork.
  3. Amend the soil with about 2” of compost or composted manure.
  4. Gently remove the plants from their pots and loosen roots. Never pull the plant out by the leaves or stems.
  5. Use a trowel to make a hole and plant fall vegetable seedlings according to the depth and spacing guidelines provided on the plant tag.
  6. Water thoroughly and keep soil moist so roots don’t dry out.
  7. Feed with liquid or granular organic fertilizer according to label.
  8. Extend the season and protect from insects by covering beds with floating row covers. Be sure the material never directly touches the plants.

Tip:

Resist the urge to overcrowd plants. Mature plants need lots of room to grow properly.
