Why should spring and summer have all the fun? Start seeds now to have everything you need for a fall garden full of the best produce you’ve ever tasted.

Dark, leafy greens are easy to grow and love cool nights. Other edibles — herbs, squash, pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage — thrive in the fall, too.

Start Fall Edibles:  

  1. Find out when the first frost is expected in your area. Then count backward based on the seed packet information to know when to plant.  
  2. Remove any existing plant material and loosen the soil with a spading fork.
  3. Amend the soil with 2” of compost or composted manure.
  4. Using a trowel, plant fall vegetable seeds using package instructions for spacing and depth. Plant seeds twice as deep because soil is drier and temperatures are hotter.
  5. Water thoroughly and keep soil moist, especially as new seeds germinate.
  6. Feed seedlings with liquid or granular organic fertilizer according to label.
  7. Extend the season by covering beds with floating row covers. Be sure the material never directly touches the plants.

Tip:

Garlic and shallots are great additions to every fall garden.
