garden tips by region - plan fall garden

It’s easy to get caught up in the enjoyment of your garden while it is at its peak. Stretch your pleasure into next season by planning your fall garden now.

Planning Your Fall Garden:

  1. If this is a new garden, pick a site that gets at least six hours of sun each day.
  2. Measure your garden space.
  3. Sketch your garden on paper, marking any existing structures or plants that will remain.
  4. Choose your favorite cool-season crops such as broccoli, cabbage, squash, kale and peas.
  5. To know when to plant, determine the first frost date then count backward based on the seed packet information. Mark dates on sketch.
  6. If planting seedlings, schedule enough time for them to mature before the first frost.
  7. Mark your sketch with the types, number of plants and how much space they need. You can find this information on the plant tags or in The Home Depot Garden Club Plant Database.
  8. Refer back to your sketch when you’re ready to dig to remember where each plant goes.

If space is limited, prioritize. Grow vegetables you can’t find or that are too expensive at the grocery store.
