garden tips by region - edge lawns

Save time and give your lawn a defined, polished shape with edging. Edging makes a landscape look complete and keeps outdoor spaces neat and distinct. Plus, you save time from having to use a weed-trimmer by placing edging deep enough so the lawn mower’s wheel can smoothly run over it.

 How to Install Edging:

  1. Choose your edging: a solid roll of plastic or rubber edging, or individual pavers. Pavers are more durable and offer a finished look.
  2. Use a garden hose or string to define your desired shape and mark with landscape marking paint.
  3. Kill grass under the marked area with an herbicide.
  4. Dig a trench to appropriate depth and width of edging.
  5. Lay or place edging deep enough so a lawn mower’s wheels can smoothly run over it and to avoid tripping hazards.
  6. Using a level, ensure edging is even and flush with surrounding soil.
  7. Hammer in staples to secure rubber or plastic edging.
