Red, white, and blue petunias are your go-to combo for a July 4 centerpiece says Travis, one of our Home Depot Muddy Boots associates. Although it’s hard to find true-blue flowers in nature, you can substitute Rhythm and Blues petunias, developed by VIVA! and available in most Home Depot Garden Centers. Their violet-blue blooms are edged in white.
Need a splash of red? Look for Superbells ‘Pomegranate Punch’ calibrachoas. These pretty garden plants are heat tolerant and disease resistant, and you can snip their long stems for arrangements. A bright blue vase will make the colors pop.
To help cut flowers last longer, use a floral preservative in your vase, or re-cut the stems daily and change the water.
Instead of using fresh-cut flowers in your centerpiece, you can also arrange live plants, like those sold in 4-6″ containers. Just display them in a straw basket or colorful bowl on your table. If your bowl is too deep, stuff a few sheets of crumpled newspaper into the bottom to help lift the plants above the rim. Hide the pots by tucking sphagnum moss around the tops, or artfully arrange the trailing stems. For filler, pop in some green leaves from hostas or other foliage plants.
For fun, add a couple of small American flags, pinwheels in patriotic colors, or other floral picks from arts and crafts stores to your festive centerpiece.
Need help finding plants for your July 4th celebration? Selections vary by location, so ask a Garden Center associate if you don’t see what you want. He or she will be glad to suggest alternatives.
Have a happy, safe July 4th!
